What is Live World Map?

Live World Map is an interactive world-exploration tool that brings global events from several public data sources to an approachable, interactive 3D globe. It displays real earthquakes, wildfires, volcanoes, severe storms, and floods.

01

Current data layers

Earthquake markers come from the USGS M2.5+ Past Day Feed. Open wildfire, volcano and severe-storm records from the past 30 days come from NASA EONET. Flood records from GDACS cover active or recently updated events from the past seven days.

02

Data sources

Flood data is provided by the Global Disaster Awareness and Coordination System (GDACS). GDACS information may be incomplete, delayed, or uncertain and does not replace official emergency alerts or guidance from local authorities. Event locations and timing may be approximate; this map is for visualization and general information. The global view uses NASA Blue Marble, while the closer base map uses OpenFreeMap.

03

How to use it

Drag the globe to rotate, then scroll or pinch to zoom. Select any layer marker to view its time, coordinates, and source. Layer toggles only control the markers already displayed; they do not request the feeds again.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are the events on this page real data?

Yes. Earthquakes come from the USGS M2.5+ Past Day Feed and refresh every five minutes. Open wildfire, volcano and severe-storm records from NASA EONET refresh every 30 minutes. The GDACS flood layer shows active or recently updated events from the past seven days and also refreshes every 30 minutes.

Are GDACS flood markers official emergency alerts?

No. GDACS information may be incomplete, delayed, or uncertain and does not replace official emergency alerts or guidance from local authorities.

Why does the page need an internet connection?

The page requests data from USGS, NASA EONET, and GDACS, as well as closer map information from OpenFreeMap. MapLibre GL JS renders the interactive globe, while NASA Blue Marble imagery is served with the page.

Can I use the 3D globe on a phone?

Yes. The mobile experience supports touch drag and pinch zoom. Event details open in a bottom sheet so the globe is not permanently covered.
